Natural Pest Control for Gnats and Fruit Flies

Natural Pest Control for Gnats and Fruit Flies

You see that precious face?  That beautiful black cat that came in my life 6 years ago is such a joy but as he’s aged he’s gone from hard cat food to canned.  With that canned food we’ve gained new “pets” – gnats or perhaps they’re fruit flies.  Frankly, I’m sick of them in my house.

My whole life I’ve never really been bothered by these flying demons until this wet cat food thing.  Those little buggers bite!!!  I have welts – large welts that last two or more weeks and they itch like there’s no tomorrow.  I’m grateful for allergy medication to help with the itching.  I’m taking a store brand loratadine.  I’ve found that Young Living’s Animal Scents is a big help in the healing process as well.

Ultimately, however, we needed to do something to get rid of these pests and after lots of searching, I found something that I could do – Apple Cider Vinegar.

But not organic ACV.  Nope, those insects don’t want the good stuff.  They didn’t even respond very well to the good stuff.  They want the cheap stuff.  Witchcraft I tell you!

I can’t change my cat’s food back to dry – he’s an old man and very, very picky – so now I’ve become the gnat trapper.

Here’s what you need for your natural pest control:

What you need to do:

In a shallow dish or small bowl, add a tiny bit of water and then a few drops of dish soap.  Use the water to thin the soap so that it is mixed.  Then add some ACV, maybe 1/4 cup.  You can put the container wherever you have problems with fruit flies or gnats.  I put my containers in the bathroom, behind the cat’s Neater Feeder, and on the nightstand.

You have to be very diligent in keeping up with this method.  The ACV evaporates and the whole solution needs to be replenished every 4 or 5 days.  But if you keep up with this I promise that your problem will disappear even with wet cat food.

You have to be sure to keep dirty dishes out of the sink so that the gnats aren’t drawn from the cat food to the sink.  Keep your trash covered to take it out often.  Keep the cat’s litter box cleaned out because those little things love damp dirt and the cat’s box fits the bill.

Now if I find a bite it’s unusual rather than an every day occurrence.  Let me know in the comments if you’ve had a similar problem and what natural pest control solutions worked for you.

  1. Hey Sandy, I am thrilled to read your post. For the past week, I’ve been having those creeps around my sink even when it is empty. I’ve used drainex and all kinds of things. Finally I filled a spray bottle with ACV and voila! they reduced drastically. I accidentally discovered the secret. And thank heavens they like the cheap stuff! 🙂 I am so glad you’ve solved the problem. And yes, those bites are horrible!
