Happy New Year! I hope that 2014 finds you well. My word for 2014 is going to be LOVE. The Merriam-Webster’s definition of the verb love is…
However, God’s definition is much broader and more encompassing. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 says,
4 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
Love is an action word. Our church has a great slogan: Love God, Love Others. It comes from Matthew 22:36-40, Mark 12:30-31, and Luke 10:27 where Jesus talks about the Great Commandment. But it really comes from Exodus 20. The first 5 Commandments talk about loving and honoring God and the second 5 talk about loving others. Combine them and in it’s most simple form it becomes Love God, Love Others.
This year, I’m going to work on judging less and loving more. Giving more and taking less. Touching more and ignoring less. Being more positive and more optimistic. So, come along with me on my journey. Heck, pick your own word and start your own journey. We can do it together. I’m looking forward to the many different ways I can show love and to be Jesus to the world.
